Venice is traditionally a favourite tourist destination for a whole range of visitors. Large numbers of people create a constant problem for the city. The giant cruise ships that used to tower over the city have been banned and tourism was greatly reduced during 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. Now, however, things are changing back to a new "normal", where surveillance cameras, originally installed to fight crime, may be used to monitor visitors and to avoid crowding. Visions of "lost cities" in the jungle have consumed western imaginations since the Europeans first visited the tropics of Asia, Africa and the Americas. Several unfortunate expeditions tried, but failed, to find ancient civilizations and their treasures in dangerous tropical forests, from the Lost City of Z to El Dorado. The general idea is that hunters living in the forest, mysterious vegetation and poisonous insects, or an army of monkeys, will always destroy any significant human achievement, and explorers will never understand particularly enigmatic societies such as the Classic Maya.
