UN scientists have revealed a plan that they believe can limit the causes of dangerous climate change. The UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has now published its guidance on what the world can do to avoid an extremely dangerous future. They say in their report that there must be "rapid, deep and immediate" reductions in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Global emissions of CO2 would need to reach the highest point and start decreasing within three years to avoid the worst impacts. Even then, the world would also need technology to draw CO2 from the skies by mid-century. (Adapted from BBC News, 4 April 2022)

Understanding modern computing means more than typing at a desktop machine or picking up mail on a smartphone. Whether we are meeting friends, reading books, or checking our bank balances, computer systems increasingly mediate and shape every aspect of our lives. Rejecting digital devices is no longer a serious option. If we do not have appropriate knowledge, we risk handing over control to those who may not have our best interests at heart. Digital technologies are becoming an unprecedented force economically as well as socially. (The Guardian, March 31 2012; adapted)

University education often includes a variety of subjects that students may not need for career advancement. Vocational education, on the other hand, offers courses that are directly related to a specific field or position. Enrolling in these courses is a good choice for those who want a concrete experience that is essential in business and market sectors. However, vocational education should not be regarded as just a way to learn a practical trade, such as plumbing or carpentry, but as an approach that can develop new knowledge and skills required in other important professional fields. Vocational education
can be suggested for both practical and professional occupations
Unlike Easter in the UK, Corfu's Orthodox version of this ancient spring festival is one of the country's biggest celebrations. For instance, on Easter Saturday you can follow crowds in the city's old town to discover spectacular traditions. At 11 a.m., bells ring for what's known locally as "the first resurrection". On high balconies along the main square, people emerge with giant terracotta pots, all filled with water. While bands play religious music, pots are thrown to the streets below, with cries of "Watch out!" and "Christ is risen!" (theguardian.com/travel, Apr 14 2022; adapted)

"Watch out!" in this context means
   Be careful!
Using inclusive language is a vital part of being an effective communicator, and it is also a way of showing consideration for everyone we meet. Inclusive language recognizes and accepts personal characteristics such as gender, race, nationality, ethnicity, religion, or other attributes that make up a person's identity. The key is to avoid damaging, stereotypical language that makes individuals feel excluded, misunderstood, and disrespected. In the workplace, for example, the use of inclusive language is very important as it aims to encourage a welcoming, respectful, and accessible environment for all.
