Take your time to write the essay: don't just write the first thing that crosses your ______.   mind
Teachers are reporting a rise in extremist views and conspiracy theories among pupils, which will worsen unless schools equip them with training and resources to tackle dangerous thinking and ideologies. According to a recent interview, the government's approach to dealing with extremism is too focused on identifying and reporting pupils thought to be at risk of radicalisation, rather than teaching pupils how to reject and discuss hateful views and ideologies. Also, the teaching against extremism in UK schools appears to be "highly variable" and sometimes "superficial" with teachers in a "babysitter" role. (The Guardian, Sept 7 2021; adapted)

Teachers who are whiteboard enthusiasts believe that, by increasing engagement and motivation, the boards are making a difference to the pupils they teach. They describe working with pupils who are more interested, who actively participate and, at the very least, are more inclined to show up for classes where the whiteboard is used. And yet the statistical evidence suggests that difference is not carried through to testing and assessment. (The Guardian, June 20 2006; adapted)

Text comprehension If the thought of fractions or equations makes you break out in a cold sweat, you are not alone. Maths anxiety - a negative emotional reaction to mathematics - is a global phenomenon, impeding maths achievement regardless of where people live. It is not only a child's own maths anxiety that affects their performance but that of their peers: recent research suggests that in about half of the countries under investigation the average level of maths anxiety within the same school or classroom predicts individual students' maths achievement, independently of their own anxiety levels. (The Guardian, Feb 7 2022; adapted)

Text comprehension Teachers who are whiteboard enthusiasts believe that, by increasing engagement and motivation, the whiteboards are making a difference to the pupils. They believe that pupils are more interested and work better in class. And yet the statistical evidence suggests that difference is not carried through to testing and assessment. Given this paradox, Leo Sietniekas - a training specialist at Hull University's Centre for Educational Studies - wonders if it is right to try linking the benefits of whiteboards to attainment. (The Guardian, June 20 2006; adapted)

According to Mr. Sietniekas, whiteboards

That red wine is not to be paired with seafood is nearly a religious dogma among connoisseurs. Their reason is that the combination usually results in a strong and unpleasant fishy aftertaste. The traditional explanation for the bad pairing is based on the presence of tannins - chemicals that make red wines taste dry and cause the mouth to contract. Yet, every now and again, a tannin-rich red wine that does go well with seafood turns up. (Adapted from The Economist, Oct 31 2009)

The "Political Impartiality in Schools" guidance, published by the Department for Education on Thursday, asks schools to think carefully when planning lessons and choosing class materials. It aims to help teachers cover complex topics, such as the history of the British Empire or the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, without pushing one political view over another. This means that where teachers present controversial political views in a lesson, they must offer a balanced overview of opposing views. There is also a warning against teachers expressing their own views. Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi says no subject should be off limits, but teaching must be impartial. The almost constant usage of technology by today's young people is thought to be leading to concentration difficulties among students. Microsoft, in fact, conducted research that compared overall attention spans between the years 2000 and 2015. They found that people concentrated less, the average spans had reduced by an alarming four seconds - from twelve to eight seconds. Millennials, born at the end of the 20th century, report that they can concentrate for longer periods of time, however, if the material is engaging with visuals or a clear storyline. The Bermuda Triangle is one of the world's most ambiguous geographic areas where many mysterious cases have remained unresolved. In this area, from 1945 onwards, more than a hundred airplanes and ships have vanished, and more than a thousand lives have been lost. Many of these ships and airplanes have gone missing during a normal radio conversation with their base, while others have sent extraordinary messages saying that their instruments did not function properly, or that the sky had turned yellow on a clear day, without any clarification of what was happening. The big storms and extremely strong winds that have hit Britain this winter have brought down more than eight million trees, and the announced storms may cause further damage. Huge and ancient trees have fallen, together with their roots and the earth around them. Climate change is having a severe impact on nature and the environment, too, and measures to manage and plant trees must take weather unpredictability into account to limit such disastrous consequences. The celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has joined hundreds of school leaders to ask the government to improve the quality of school lunches. Many believe that food quality has declined because too little money is invested in school food. Indeed, the amount of money paid daily for each child's food is £2.34, and this has remained unchanged since 2011. Moreover, students complain that there are no healthy options: some schools used to offer plenty of fruit and vegetables, but they have now stopped, and what is available these days is just junk food. The debate about access to mobile phones in schools is ongoing in the UK, where more than 90% of teenagers have mobiles. A study by the London School of Economics found that in schools where mobiles were banned, the test scores of 16-year-olds improved by 6.4% - the equivalent of adding five days to the school year. Yet, there is no law in the UK prohibiting phone usage in schools: the decision is left to each school. The fallout from the global slowdown in the airline industry is still casting a shadow over airline suppliers, despite the resurgence of budget airlines. L Gardner, the engineering company, said yesterday that it had got rid of its final dividend and would cut 250 staff in the face of uncertain short-term prospects after the events of September 11. The supplier to Boeing and Rolls-Royce said that it would cut about 10 per cent of its workforce in a cost-cutting drive, announced last month, to pre-empt lower business levels. The global campaign to gain control of plastic waste is one of the fastest-growing environmental causes. Yet, it hasn't been enough to stop the growing amount of plastic that pollutes the seas. In the next 10 years, the waste that slides into the oceans will reach 58 million tons a year. That's the "good" news-because that estimate takes into account the ambitious commitments by governments and industry to reduce plastic pollution. The new Slow Ways map will soon connect every town, city and thousands of villages across Britain via walking routes. To take one example, you can explore more of West Sussex on foot now. The county is well known for its National Trails, like the 100-mile-long hills of the South Downs Way and the Seven Sisters cliff walk. The Slow Ways map can also take you from Storrington to Worthing, a 10- mile route from the South Downs to the sea via the medieval village of Findon. (BBC.com/travel, May 5 2021; adapted)

The Ouray Ice Park sits at the mouth of a narrow canyon sculpted by the Uncompahgre River. Here on the Rocky Mountains in the south-west United States, the landscape changes quickly from alpine terrain to red rock plateau. Just below the park is Ouray, a historical mining town that is now a busy hub for outdoor recreation. It is known as the "Switzerland of America", and is a favourite destination for ice climbing on waterfalls created by a small team of "ice farmers". (https://www.bbc.com/travel/, February 16 2022)

The Republic of Venice moved glass furnaces to the island of Murano in the late 1200s. This was done to prevent the risk of fires in Venice and probably also to protect glassmaking art techniques. Glassmaking businesses have always been run by families for generations, and since it was males who would inherit the furnace and the craft of Venetian-style glass making, sons, not daughters, were trained into the business and its secrets from a young age. We only know of one woman, back in the 1400s, who was allowed to own and manage her own furnace. (Adapted from www.bbc.com, March 18, 2022 )

The rising price of gas is in the news again. Energy, in fact, is a major issue for everyone. The UK Department for Education (DfE) estimates that 22% of state school pupils, or more than 1.7 million, were "persistently absent" in the 2021 autumn term. That appears to agree with data showing that hundreds of thousands of children were absent from school with confirmed and suspected cases of Covid-19. However, the DfE also estimates that overall attendance rates in primary state schools are returning to normal - 95% in February - and just 0.7% of pupils absent for Covid- related reasons on 3 March, compared with 2.2% in February. The word 'news' comes from the late 1300s from the French word 'nouvelle'. News is simply new information about something that has happened. It is unusual in English because the word 'new' is an adjective, but 'news' is not an adjective, it is a noun, an uncountable noun, and even though it has an S, it is singular. There are many reasons behind youth violence. Sometimes, children and teenagers who attack their classmates at school lack love and attention at home. Even sweet, shy children may participate in violent activities because they wish to be accepted by their classmates. Victims are often too afraid to talk about their negative experiences with parents or teachers, and this contributes to the problem. Adults, usually, become aware that something is wrong when they notice significant changes in a child's behaviour. In this context, "contributes to" means   exaggerates

Today, the home-schooling movement is probably the fastest-growing form of education in the UK. The number of home-schooled children has risen by about 40% over three years. Around 48,000 children were being home-educated across the UK in 2016-2017, up from about 34,000 in 2014-15. But the real number is likely to be higher. Data is not collected centrally, and while local authorities keep a register of home-educated children, this only covers children who have been removed from school. Children who are never put into school are currently not required to register. (The Guardian, Nov 3 2018; adapted)

Today's classrooms have a diverse student population, and teachers try very hard to explore ideas that encourage an inclusive and multicultural environment. In truth, multicultural education has many advantages. Firstly, it prepares students of every age and from all cultural backgrounds to continue their education in any school of their choice, at home or abroad. Secondly, by focusing on ethnic, language, and gender issues that can marginalize groups of people, multicultural education can help students acquire the knowledge, attributes, skills, and attitudes needed to function in adult life and in a democratic society while feeling respected and heard. Two peaks that can be observed on the surface of the planet Pluto have perplexed planetary scientists for years. Some speculated it could be an ice volcano, erupting not lava but vast quantities of icy mud. Yet, no caldera could be seen. Now a full analysis of images and topographical data suggests it is not one ice volcano but a union of many - some up to 7,000 metres tall and about 10-150 km wide. Their discovery has opened another debate: what could be keeping Pluto warm enough to support volcanic activity. (The Guardian, March 29, 2022; adapted)
