Parents are usually unaware of the negative impact that their children's violent bullying actions can have on other children. Sadly, many parents have little or no understanding of this phenomenon and continue to believe that their child could never become a bully, or be involved in horrible acts of violence. However, such actions should be discouraged almost immediately, and it needs to start from the home environment in order to avoid unfortunate incidents. Parents or teachers of teenagers may find it hard to believe that sarcasm is a sign of a flexible and inventive mind. Yet, that is exactly what psychologists and neuroscientists have been arguing. They have found that sarcasm requires the brain to create numerous connections to arrive at a correct interpretation, requiring more brainpower than literal statements. Although it is often considered juvenile irreverence, sarcasm is actually evidence of maturity - because it takes years for a child's developing brain to fully understand and master it. Physical education provides unique opportunities for children to move with ease and confidence as they enjoy actions such as running, turning, twisting, chasing, throwing, catching, striking, floating and balancing. They are encouraged to respond to challenges to the mind and body, to participate, to compete and to co- operate with others. From their earliest years children enjoy physical activities. The physical education programme which provides a wide variety of movement activities builds on these early experiences of the child.

Post-Brexit changes to Britain's immigration rules have led to an unprecedented collapse in bookings for school trips from the continent, with countries, such as Ireland, now more popular than the UK. While the pandemic has depressed European school travel in general, Europeans prefer short-stay educational visits to alternative EU destinations where English is widely spoken. While Britain's Covid test requirement is a factor, by far the most significant reason is the UK's decision not to accept EU group passports or identity cards, and to require full passports, plus expensive individual visas for non-EU pupils. (The Guardian, Dec 26 2021; adapted)

Protecting children's education in conflict zones such as Syria is to be supported with £15.8 million of UK funding. Some children in Syria have spent their entire lives at war. A Syrian education project leader said there were children who did not know what a shopping mall was, but who could identify every imaginable kind of war plane. Dominic Raab said financial support would help some of the "world's most vulnerable children". The Syrian Education Programme, supported by UK aid, has helped to keep children in school financially and psychologically and to pay teachers. (Adapted from www.bbc.com, 12th July 2021)
