Biology graduate Anna Forbes, 23, did her training in a research laboratory. In her opinion, she wouldn't know what she wanted to do if she hadn't arrived at a better understanding of different environments, or met the people she has met - especially her bosses, who have influenced her ambitions significantly. She thinks that training schemes are the best way to see what catches your interest: "It can be really valuable to try something completely new, and if you don't love it, it's not forever." Book bans are on the rise in the U.S.A. Many advocates for these bans claim that they want to protect children from "vulgar, explicit material." Yet, this most recent wave of book banning is as dangerous as it has been throughout history. Fortunately, librarians and authors are fighting back. Books help us process difficult things in the past and the present. We should keep reading thought- provoking (and even fear-provoking) books. (The Washington Post, Feb 8 2022; adapted)

Bullying has always been a problem in school, with several techniques being developed through the years. Recent studies have started advancing the idea that bullying is a violation of children's human rights. It is so harmful that its negative effects can affect the victim's life for several decades. Researchers have provided some strategies that could successfully help to fight against bullying. For example, parents need to be educated to recognise bullies and to fight against prejudices, reinforcing good behaviour, while teachers should encourage class discussion to increase children's understanding on the topic. (Adapted from BBC news Mar 14, 2022)

Bullying is a form of violence used to dominate individuals considered inferior or weak and can happen in childhood and in adulthood too. Some research studies have found that if bullying occurs in early childhood years, victims can develop depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts, and can become more vulnerable to these mental illnesses in adulthood. These studies also suggest that bullying could reduce processes of adaptation to adult roles, including forming lasting relationships and being economically independent. Bullying, cyber-bullying and violence in schools are human rights violations. Schools can, and should, play a key role in dealing with these abuses. Whole- school anti-bullying programmes are needed, which promote peer support systems and involve active and well-trained teachers and parents to develop a safe learning environment in which no violence is allowed. Roughly half of the world's students aged 13-15 say they have experienced violence in and around school. Nearly one in three students of this age say they have experienced bullying or been involved in fights. (Adapted from Council of Europe)
