Seven Pillars of Wisdom is T.H. Lawrence's account of the 1916-1918 Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire. It offers a thorough look at war and its consequences. Lawrence was an excellent gymnast and a skilled mechanic. During the revolt, he carried Malory's King Arthur's Death in his bag, and in later life he translated Homer's Odyssey. Soon called "Prince Dynamite", Lawrence proved to be - in the words of military historian B.H. Liddell Hart (1895-1970) - "a supreme artist of war" for his highly effective military tactics. (The Washington Post, March 9 2022; adapted)

Several common educational strategies favour the idea that, in the classroom, challenge and struggle are vital to learning. John Hattie, the director of the Melbourne Educational Research Institute at the University of Melbourne, in Australia, spent 15 years studying the educational factors that most influence learning. In 2017, he published "10 Mindframes for Visible Learning," which identified the factors that work best to accelerate learning. One of these factors is actually having to cope with problems and not "just doing your best." (Adapted from The New York Times, 8 April 2022)

Shanghai, China's most populous city, went into another COVID-19 lockdown, and officials asked its 25-million residents to stay indoors. The streets of this financial city are empty for the second time since the start of the pandemic, and its bridges and tunnels are also closed down. Officials earlier attempted to limit lockdowns to certain neighborhoods and buildings, but the city was not able to control new cases. Some residents were surprised by these restrictions, and they woke up to find a fence around their houses. (Adapted from News in Levels)

Singapore is well known for its urbanisation and its fundamental role in the world financial market, but recently it has also become popular in social media because of a 79-year-old man. People have been reacting with shock and surprise to his story: he has been living in a tent in a forest for almost 30 years, surviving by trading flowers and vegetables. After his situation was discovered by the authorities, help was given and the man was offered a place in a shared house. (Adapted from BBC news Feb 20, 2022)

Sissinghurst Castle, located in Kent (England), was the home of the writer and artist Vita Sackville-West. Together with the Castle, the garden is a popular historical site with its enclosed "garden rooms" as well as the many different types of ancient roses and plants that can be found there. The White Garden is maybe the most famous area of Sissinghurst, with its shades of white, grey and green created by the combination of carefully selected species of local flowers, shrubs and trees. Social media and many other facets of modern life are destroying our ability to concentrate. The average teenager now believes they can follow six forms of media at the same time. Yet, there is a "switch-cost effect": if you check your texts while trying to work, you are not only losing the little time you spend looking at the texts themselves - you are also wasting the time it takes to refocus afterwards, which turns out to be a huge amount. (The Observer, Jan 02 2022; adapted)

Social networks connect people at low cost, and this can be quite beneficial for both large and small businesses wanting to expand their contact base. These networks are also very effective relationship tools because they often connect customers with the companies that sell products and services they need. In addition, companies use social networks to advertise their goods in the form of texts, images or videos that reach customers globally, making it easier to keep in touch with business contacts around the world. Some 80 percent of all the planet's earthquakes occur along the Pacific Ocean, called the "ring of fire" because of the preponderance of volcanic activity there. Most earthquakes occur at fault zones, where tectonic plates collide or slide against each other. These impacts are usually gradual and are not noticed on the surface. However, immense stress is accumulated between the plates. When stress is released quickly, it sends massive vibrations, called seismic waves, often hundreds of miles through the rock and up to the surface. Other earthquakes can occur far from fault zones, when plates are stretched or squeezed. (National Geographic -Explainer; adapted)

Standing outside the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, it is hard to believe that twenty years ago this was a post-industrial wasteland. This Basque city had to find a new direction. It reinvented itself as a hi-tech hub, and the centerpiece of this regeneration wasn't a new factory but a new art gallery. Frank Gehry's Guggenheim is as startling to the eye as the Eiffel Tower or Frank Lloyd Wright's 1959 Guggenheim in New York. But while these two buildings stand in contrast to their surroundings, this new Guggenheim deliberately embraces the site's past industrial life. (Adapted from BBC Arts, Oct 16 2017)

Students and academics can return to face-to-face teaching this term, in a place that truly has the benefits of meeting in the real world. The new Marshall Building, which looks out over Lincoln's Inn Fields, houses some of the finest spaces that any London university has to offer. Students in England will soon face a ban on using mobile phones in school. School principals are expected to enforce this ban during both breaks and lessons. Mobile phones have become a growing source of distraction and are frequently used for bullying. It's important to note that many schools have already implemented measures to restrict mobile phone usage, and the government encourages school principals to limit their use.
(Adapted from The Independent, 2 October 2023)

Students' seating arrangement in the classroom is very important, as it influences their attitude towards each other and towards the teacher. A horseshoe arrangement allows face-to-face contact, while in a café style the learners can easily do either pairwork or groupwork. The teacher, however, needs to make sure that the students in this position do not lose sight of what is going on at the front of the classroom, where the teacher's desk is. Working back-to-back, on the other hand, is the best solution for those activities where the students should not see what the others are doing. In a café style arrangement, students   should, in any case, see the front of the classroom
Summer exams will take place in 2022 after two years of cancellations owing to the pandemic. Since the teacher-assessed grades used in 2020 and 2021 led to record results for students, Ofqual - the UK exams regulator - will return to pre- pandemic exam grading. The planned changes mean that in 2022 almost 91,000 pupils could fail to achieve very good and excellent grades. That is, the grades will be lower, compared with 2021. However, results in summer 2022 are still expected to be slightly higher than 2019. (The Guardian, Feb 7 2022; adapted)

Sundial is Catriona Ward's fourth novel, following the excellent Rawblood and Little Eve, and the bestselling combination of thriller and horror that was The Last House on Needless Street. It is, again, terrifying in its exploration of what humans will do to one another and the consequences of childhood trauma. Ward captures beauty and terror in Rob's thoughts and actions, as she returns to the endless sand and heat of her home in the desert, where "the land is spread out like a dirty coyote fur under the sky".
