Making the right career choice is an important step for all students. However, many students, especially after completing their compulsory school years, are often doubtful about how to continue their education. Vocational education has many career-building benefits as it is both practical and useful for professional growth, and this is why many universities are beginning to offer vocational courses in addition to their traditional academic options. Many consider education to be something for the young, something that takes place at school or university. It has, however, also been called the "social continuity of life" and is seen overall as a social benefit, extending beyond school and into the workplace. Education continues, in fact, throughout life, through programmes designed to build soft skills like problem solving or team building as well as in specific training days. In our world, continuing to ask questions, to study and to build our skills is increasingly becoming essential for all. Many individuals-particularly women and certain minorities-say that online molestation is on the rise. Social media has created this rise because it is easier to say unpleasant things online, than it is to someone's face. Several people and organisations, fed up with the prevalence of cyberbullying and trolling, have called for governments and social media companies to find solutions. Finding a solution that both blocks molestation and preserves freedom of expression is not simple. Many have looked to corporations, such as Facebook, asking them to report online molestation directly to police, deactivate accounts, or both. (British Library, Jan 28 2015; adapted)

Many parents invest in their children's futures by sending them to do English language courses. In many private language schools in Italy, the teachers are native speakers. In fact, schools advertising for staff often say clearly that native speakers are what customers are looking for. In a recent research project, the question was asked whether Italian customers really consider native speaker teachers to be essential in such cases. The results suggest that customers do want native speakers even though they may not be as well qualified as local teachers. Martin Greenwald and his team are developing a nuclear fusion reactor. They have shown in a recent paper, published in 2020, that their design should work - which restores optimism that this clean, limitless power source will help mitigate the climate crisis. While the reactor remains in early development, it can already generate more energy than it consumes. Scientists promise that it will be able to start producing electricity by the end of the decade. A key motivation for the ambitious timeline is meeting energy requirements in a warming world. (The Guardian, Dec 28 2020; adapted)

McKinsey published a report on the impact of the first year of the pandemic on students learning and wellbeing in the US. Their analysis shows that the impact was significant, leaving students on average five months behind in mathematics. The pandemic also widened pre-existing gaps: in math, students in predominantly Black schools ended the year with six months of unfinished learning, students in low-income schools with seven. And the crisis had an impact also on the broader health and well-being of students, with more than 35 percent of parents very or extremely concerned about their children's mental health. Mindfulness is a type of meditation where you notice sensations and emotions in the present moment without judgment. It helps reduce depression and anxiety in adults, but it may improve adolescents' response to stress through better cognitive performance and emotional control. Most of the evidence comes from studies of school-based programs where students spend up to an hour on daily meditation practice. More recent research suggests, however, that teenagers who spend a one-week period of intensive meditation in a quiet, isolated place may have benefits similar to those who spend several weeks on shorter daily practice. (Adapted from Northwest Bulletin - University of Washington, April 2018)

More than 1 million girls who thought of themselves as sporty at primary school lose interest in physical activity as teenagers, according to estimates based on a new survey. The study, by Women in Sport, found that a fear of being judged and a lack of confidence were the main reasons cited for a diminishing interest in sport among teenage girls. Its analysis of more than 4,000 teenagers found that 43% of girls felt they were sporty at primary school, but no longer saw themselves this way. This would correspond to 1.3 million girls across the UK. (The Guardian, March 7, 2022; adapted)

Multicultural education is often seen as a responsibility of teachers of specific subjects, but it is the task of all educators to discuss multicultural topics with their students. Indeed, it is important to understand that multicultural education is a great learning opportunity and all teachers should work hard to make their curricula and classrooms more inclusive and more relevant for everyone, incorporating teaching styles that support students from different backgrounds.
